The Witcher‘s final chapter has been written.
Premiering in 2019, the fantasy drama was based on author Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series of the same name and follows monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, who travels a medieval-inspired world slaying supernatural creatures for coin.
Though Henry Cavill starred as the reluctant hero for the first three seasons, Netflix announced in October 2022 that Liam Hemsworth would take over the role. He made his debut as Geralt in season 4.
“Initially, I was pretty hesitant and unsure,” the actor told Tudum in October 2025. “It’s an odd thing to be asked to come in midway through a series like this and continue on as the lead character. But, as a fan of the video game, I felt like I could do something cool with it.”
The Witcher‘s official X account announced in April 2024 that the show had been greenlit for a fifth and final season.
“It’s official, The Witcher season 4 is in production,” the post read. “But that’s not all, we’re already planning season 5, which will be the final season and bring this epic show to a fitting conclusion. See you on The Continent.”
Here’s everything to know about season 5 of The Witcher.

Yes, there will be a fifth season of The Witcher. The series was renewed for two more seasons in April 2024, and The Witcher‘s official X account confirmed that those installments would conclude the series.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion,” showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

An official logline for season 5 hasn’t been released. However, Netflix did confirm that the fourth and fifth seasons of The Witcher would adapt Sapkowski’s last three books in his series: Baptism of Fire (1996), The Tower of the Swallow (1997), and Lady of the Lake (1999).
Though fans may have hoped that season 4 would reunite Geralt with Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri (Freya Allan), the finale instead drives them further apart while redefining each of their destinies. Hissrich told TIME in October 2025 that they wanted to set the characters up for a satisfying finale chapter.
“We wrote Seasons 4 and 5 back-to-back, and it created a really unique challenge: How do we craft something that feels like an organic and sort of satisfying end of a season, but still says to the audience, ‘There’s still more to come?’ ” she said.
Hissrich added, “Each of them is in their own traumatic place, and in some cases, darker than we’ve ever seen them before.”
Who is in the cast?

In addition to Hemsworth, Chalotra, and Allan reprising their starring roles, season 5 of The Witcher will likely feature other characters fans have grown to love. Eamon Farren, who plays Nilfgaardian army commander Cahir, and Joey Batey, who plays traveling bard Jaskier, are also expected to return.
Season 4 of The Witcher also introduced a few new characters that may play a part in the fifth and final season. Laurence Fishburne debuted as Regis, a mysterious barber-surgeon who turns out to be a vampire, and told Tudum that he was “really excited to be a part of this world.”
“I’ve not [acted] in a fantasy thing like this before,” the actor said in October 2025. “I’m a big fan of fantasy and science fiction, and when they asked me to join them, I was like, ‘Oh, this is interesting. This is something I’ve always wished to be able to do, and now I’m getting an opportunity to do it.’ ”

An official release date for season 5 of The Witcher hasn’t been announced. However, it will likely drop sometime in the fall of 2026, like the previous season.
In Netflix’s announcement about the renewal, the streamer noted that the final two installments of The Witcher series would be filmed back-to-back. Hissrich confirmed to GamesRadar+ in October 2025 that they had wrapped production on season 5.
“The good news is I won’t say goodbye to it quite yet, because I’m in post[-production] for a very long time for season five,” she said.
Hissrich continued, “I expected to have this period of mourning, frankly. That first sort of Monday morning that you wake up and you don’t know where to go… you’re not going to see these people that you see every day. I kept waiting for that to hit me.”
