The Mitchells vs. The Machines 2 is on the way. Netflix and the trades are confirming today what we’ve been hearing for a while: a sequel to the 2021 movie is in the works at Sony Pictures Animation, with a planned Netflix release. The project is currently in development, with planned production set to begin next year.

The news comes after speculation about the sequel first surfaced from a scooper who claimed it was in the works.

Variety was first to publish the news today. Guillermo Martinez, who was head of story on the first film, is taking over directing duties from Michael Rianda, with director JP Sans joining. Rianda is expected to be an EP on the sequel.

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are working on the screenplay for the sequel, with the duo best known for working on The Great North and Bob’s Burgers. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing through their company, Lord Miller, and Kurt Albrecht is producing for Sony Pictures Animation.

The Wrap then adds that the sequel is expected to be titled The Mitchells vs. The Mitchells, hinting that, instead of maniacal robots, they’ll be going up against themselves. Perhaps in a Us type doppelganger situation or something else?

Netflix then confirmed the project itself on social media.

The original film was released as part of an agreement between Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation during the height of the pandemic, under which a trio of their movies would head to Netflix: this one, Vivo, and Wish Dragon. The movie was a success, with it receiving one of the old viewership metrics data drops, which Netflix used to use. Based on that, it scored 53 million viewers (based on 2 minutes of viewing) within the first month of release. At the time, that meant it was the biggest animation feature film release for Netflix.

The movie continues to pull in decent viewership for Netflix, too, ranking within the top 131-170 movies for each of the Netflix Engagement Reports released between 2023 and 2025. In the period from January 2023 through June 2025, the movie has accumulated 154 million hours, which equates to 81 million views.

Netflix’s deal for that particular movie was for a 15-year window, which expires in 2036.
