Stephen King Series ‘Castle Rock’ Heading to Netflix US in December
Halloween may be over, but Netflix is set to license seasons 1 and 2 of Castle Rock, the sci-fi supernatural thriller series that was initially a Hulu Original in the United States.
Set to arrive on Netflix in the US from December 16th, it marks the first time the series has been away from its original streaming home of Hulu, where it was released exclusively across its two seasons in 2018 and 2019. It sadly never got its planned third season and was officially canceled in November 2020.
Castle Rock brought together a striking ensemble across its two seasons. The first followed André Holland as Henry Deaver, a lawyer drawn back to his unsettling hometown, alongside Melanie Lynskey’s empathetic and telepathic Molly, Bill Skarsgård’s mysterious inmate known only as The Kid, Jane Levy’s sharp-tongued Jackie Torrance, and Sissy Spacek’s Ruth Deaver, whose dementia exposes the town’s buried horrors.
Season 2 shifted focus to Lizzy Caplan’s Annie Wilkes in a reimagined origin for the Misery character, supported by Elsie Fisher as her daughter Joy, Tim Robbins as crime-family patriarch Pop Merrill, Paul Sparks as the menacing Ace, and Barkhad Abdi and Yusra Warsama as siblings Abdi and Nadia caught in the expanding chaos.
When we previously covered Castle Rock’s availability on Netflix, it was around five years ago, and back then, a few international regions had begun picking up the show, including Asian territories like Hong Kong, Japan, and India, although it’s since departed.
The series isn’t being licensed to Netflix from Hulu (Disney) but rather Warner Bros. Television, which owns the underlying rights to the series.
This is one of many pickups Netflix has from Warner Bros. Television, both in the United States and internationally, coming up shortly. We just reported that The West Wing is expected to land on Netflix US throughout December. Although not confirmed, some of the other titles we’re expecting to land on Netflix (first reported by Portal Netflix) include One Tree Hill, Smallville, The Vampire Diaries, and many others – more details as we get them.
While Netflix isn’t completely empty-handed when it comes to Stephen King adaptations, Castle Rock does make a fine addition, given that his adaptations have seen a resurgence in popularity as of late, with movies like The Long Walk and the IT show on HBO Max.
