Netflix has been quick over the past year or so with some of its adult animation in giving swift renewal announcements. It happened recently with Long Story Short and Tomb Raider, and the same is now happening with Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which has been renewed a day after its season 1 release.

The news of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch getting a season 2 renewal isn’t entirely surprising. In fact, we first learned that season 2 of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch was back in the works as early as 3 years ago when Joseph Mwamba unveiled on LinkedIn that he’d been recruited as a writer’s assistant on the second season. At Netflix’s request, however, we held off on reporting

The announcement of the second season came through IGN’s FanFest, with showrunner Derek Kolstad confirming the news.

“We’ve got a season two coming your way,” he announced to the world. When asked about timing or a release window, Derek admitted, “We don’t, you know, and being new to animation, I know how long it takes.” He explained that while production is still early, things are moving forward: “We are fully into pre-production, and everyone is super excited about where we go next.”

The host then pressed for details, pointing out that season one ended “on a pretty big and definite note.” Derek teased that the apparent finality might be misleading, hinting that fans could see familiar faces again: “What I love about those kinds of endings are when you return to it, you know, usually we see one of three ways. One, you address right away. Two, you ignore it. Or three, it’s a hybrid approach.”

He confirmed the new season will use that third option: “And here it’s a hybrid approach, right?” Derek added that season two will raise the stakes while keeping its grounded, character-focused feel. “What I think you can see in season two is a larger scale story, but the intimacy of character and the intimacy of action.”

The news comes a day after the series dropped on Netflix and has picked up a slew of positive reviews, currently sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. ButWhyTho? praised its action sequences and twisty plot, while Collider ultimately concluded that the series lacked punch.

The show has gotten off to a slow start in the Netflix top 10s; however, it has only featured in 17 countries out of 93 eligible countries after day 1 of its release, according to FlixPatrol. The first viewership figures, if they feature in the English TV top 10, will arrive on Tuesday, October 21st.

Netflix soon confirmed officially that the show would be returning for season 2, alongside a first look poster:
