Reshona Landfair, a woman whose testimony contributed to R. Kelly’s sex abuse convictions, is ready to tell her own story — on her terms.

Landfair, known as “Jane Doe” during the disgraced R&B singer’s trial, was the 14-year-old girl in the child pornography video that led to Kelly’s convictions on racketeering and sex trafficking. Now, in her forthcoming memoirWho’s Watching Shorty?, Landfair will reflect on the experience of being a victim subject to public opinion, growing up in an environment that made Kelly’s abuse possible and learning to reclaim herself from the lasting shame the abuse imposed on her.

Who’s Watching Shorty? begins by outlining a pattern — from her family members, music business executives, social services and law enforcement — of looking away when it came to Kelly. He had fame and celebrity on his side, Landfair notes in the book’s synopsis, which ultimately enabled the abuse.

“What was it like to be a young teenager, emotionally still a child, and be caught up in his orbit? Why did she believe he loved her, despite how badly he treated her? Why did she keep his secrets for so long?” the synopsis asks.

“This book is an insider’s view from the girl, now woman, that R. Kelly called his “goddaughter,” the man to whom she lost her virginity, her voice, her freedom and nearly her life, in the years he had her under his perverse control,” it continues.

Landfair’s memoir aims to inspire bravery, but more importantly, encourage readers to look after their loved ones. It’s also a way for Landfair to own her identity once again — after testifying as Jane Doe in Kelly’s trial, she’s speaking out under her own name and in a way she sees fit.

“I wrote this book because I want other young women to know that no matter what has been done to you, or what you have endured, it was not your fault,” Landfair says in a statement to PEOPLE. “Show yourself some grace and the healing will begin.”

Mikki Kendall, author of the New York Times bestseller Hood Feminism, hailed Landfair’s memoir as “beautifully brutal.”
