Filming for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia could start in 2026.

It’s been years since we had a relevant update on the future of Netflix’s My Hero Academia live-action adaptation. With confirmation that Alice in Borderland director Sato Shinsuke will direct the adaptation, we also learned that filming is eyed for late 2026. Here’s everything we know about the live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia on Netflix.

My Hero Academia is an upcoming Netflix Original film and an adaptation of the manga series created by Kōhei Horikoshi, which was serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump. The film will be directed by Sato Shinsuke, best known for helming all three seasons of the popular live-action adaptation of Alice in Borderland. The film will be written by Jason Fuchs, who is most well-known for writing films such as Wonder Woman, Argylle, and is co-showrunner of HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry.

Legendary Entertainment is producing the film, with Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Jay Ashenfelter, and Adrian Chaw listed as producers.


What is the plot of My Hero Academia?

Izuku Midoriya, a superhero fanboy, was born quirkless in a world where 80% of the population has manifested “quirks” that grant superpowers. His dreams of attending a prestigious high school for aspiring superheroes are shattered, but that all changes after a chance encounter with the greatest superhero of the era, All Might.

My Hero Academia has been in development for many years now, but we’re still approximately a year away from production getting underway. In issue 1473 of Production Weekly, the status is listed as “Fall 2026,” which typically indicates when production is expected to start.

If filming begins in Fall  2026 (September-November), we would expect it to end sometime between February and April 2027. But this largely depends on the scale of the projects.

As always, filming dates are subject to change, and we expect to learn more in 2026.


When is the live-action My Hero Academia Netflix release?

Netflix has yet to disclose when we can expect to see My Hero Academia on the platform.

Given the length and potential start time of production, it’s hard not to see a world where My Hero Academia isn’t released on Netflix until sometime in 2028.
