Lena Dunham Reveals ‘Too Much’ Won’t Be Back for Season 2 at Netflix

Lena Dunham’s first show for Netflix won’t be coming back for more.

Originally pitched as a limited series, it became clear in the lead-up to release that Netflix and creator Lena Dunham had left the door open to more episodes of Too Much, the fish-out-of-water comedy series set in London, United Kingdom.

Released in July 2025, Megan Stalter headlined the cast of the romantic comedy series that saw her character move from New York to London in the hopes of following the footsteps of many of the love stories she’d seen in movies. Once here in Blighty, however, she quickly discovers that the UK isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but does fall in love with an unlikely man: an indie musician.

The news of the series not returning comes from Deadline (late on a Friday), which attended one of Netflix’s ongoing FYC events last week ahead of next year’s award season. An FYC event is where show stars and creators pitch awards voters in hopes of being nominated. Too Much is one of 11 shows listed on the comedy series page, with the largest tiles going to Nobody Wants This and Wednesday, and Too Much listed alongside series like Leanne, North of North, and The Four Seasons.

Lena Dunham confirmed Netflix’s decision not to renew the show during a discussion of the ending, which sees Meg and Will get married. “We realized we had told the story,” Dunham says during the panel, “It ends with a wedding. There’s even a little Easter egg, which is that within the final scene you can hear me yell ‘cut!’ We had done what we needed to do, and part of the job is knowing when to park it.”

Speaking to TUDUM at the time of release, Dunham did hint at possible storylines to come, saying, “I wanted the finale to leave us inspired, but also going, ‘They haven’t known each other that long.’ It’s that dual feeling of totally embracing it and also wondering, ‘Are they going to be divorced in three months?”

Deadline states that Dunham and Netflix aren’t shutting the door entirely on a follow-up, but for now, at least, it appears the series is done. Unlike other Netflix series that haven’t been renewed, though, it’s wrapped up quite nicely, so we wouldn’t discourage you from watching it.

How well did Too Much perform on Netflix?

As we wrote in our season 2 renewal status post at the time, however, the series didn’t come out the door guns blazing. The show featured in the daily top 10s in 55 countries, with it appearing in the United Kingdom top 10 for 13 days before dropping out, and in the United States for 3 days before dropping out.

The 10-episode series also notably missed out on getting into the weekly global top 10s for its first week of availability, suggesting it got less than 2 million views in its opening days on the streamer. It ranked #10 in week 2 with 12.5M hours watched, which equates to 1.9M views.

Comedy series not appearing on Netflix’s top 10s in great force isn’t entirely rare. Some titles, like The Vince Staples Show and Mo, failed to rank well in the charts but still received season 2 pickups.

We’ll have more data on the show’s performance through the Netflix Engagement Report, covering the back half of this year’s viewership, in early 2026.

The show also picked up solid reviews from critics and audiences alike. It sits on RottenTomatoes at 79% and managed to pick up the Certified Fresh rating, and on IMDb its score is sitting at 6.3.

Lena Dunham will continue to work with Netflix on new projects under a creative deal announced during Next on Netflix UK 2025. Their next project, which Netflix took over, is Good Sex, which concluded production this Summer. That film stars Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and Rashida Jones.
