Is Hugh Jackman returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wolverine with Avengers: Doomsday? The actor had officially retired from the iconic role with the 2017 film Logan, which was intended to conclude the character’s story. But he decided to surprise his fans by wearing the classic yellow-and-blue suit in Deadpool & Wolverine, alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.

The superhero action, directed by Shawn Levy, became the second-highest-grossing film of 2024, earning $1.3 billion at the box office and receiving several awards. With the film’s immense success, fans questioned if the 57-year-old actor would return to the screen to play Wolverine. The answer to that question is his words, “Never say never.”

Hugh Jackman Is “Never Saying ‘Never’ Ever Again”

Hugh Jackman appeared on The Graham Norton Show recently. When asked if he would play the iconic superhero once more, he smiled and coyly said, “Maybe,” prompting the crowd at the studio to go “ooooooh.” He then added, “I’m never saying ‘never’ ever again… I did mean it until the day I changed my mind. I did mean it for quite a few years.”

He further joked, “I have done ten films now, so I think they have enough for an AI version of me!” Hugh was first seen as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men. He then reprised his role in 2002’s X2: X-Men United, 2005’s X-Men: The Last Stand, 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 2013’s The Wolverine, 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, 2017’s Logan, and 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

Fans are convinced that his “maybe” was a hint that he is in the upcoming Avengers movies. Moreover, many of Hugh’s X-Men co-stars have already been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to be released in December 2026. Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and Channing Tatum (Gambit) are returning to the MCU.

When Hugh Jackman Cryptically Answered If He’s In Avengers: Doomsday

Previously, during an interview with The View, Hugh addressed the rumours of his return to the franchise’s current Multiverse Saga. He said, “I really can’t say much, except when you say ‘appear’, [it’s] more like dominate and destroy every other character—I’m kidding. I really have nothing to add, and if I did, I would find a really cool way not to say it, but I actually have nothing to add.”
