Netflix has quietly acquired the documentary “Sangre Del Toro,“ which looks back on the career and distinct work of Guillermo del Toro, who is currently embarking on a busy press tour for his new Netflix movie, “Frankenstein.“ The documentary will be released on Netflix on November 21st, 2025.
The title has already premiered at Cannes and the Venice Film Festival, where, in the latter, it was part of a documentary lineup focused on cinema, releasing alongside Megadoc, Holofiction, The Ozu Diaries, Mata Hair, among others.
Sangre del Toro explores Guillermo del Toro’s singular gift for fusing his Mexican roots with the cultural influences of Hollywood, Paris, and his hometown of Guadalajara. Through the lens of “cultural syncretism,” the documentary presents del Toro as a contemporary Minotaur —a figure both human and monstrous, navigating a labyrinth of creativity and symbolism. Audiences are invited to wander the enchanted corridors of his imagination, uncovering the human and the beastly forces that shape his cinematic world.

French director Yves Montmayeur is behind the documentary with his prior work, including 1000 Eyes of Dr. Maddin and Mad in Belgium. The doc is produced by Brilliant Pictures’ Sean O’Kelly, Marc Bikindou, and Thierry Tripod for Brainworks alongside Jad Ben Ammar for Kador.
Reviews upon the movie’s release across the festivals were mostly positive. ScreenDaily called it an “entertaining yet lightweight” celebration of the director
You can see a short clip from the documentary, which runs at 85 minutes, in the clip below:
Of course, Guillermo del Toro has called Netflix his home for several years now and has numerous future projects set up there, so it makes a natural home for the documentary. Beyond receiving numerous special thanks in Netflix Originals like Society of the Snow, Leave the World Behind, Ultraman: Rising, and most recently, The Woman in Cabin 10, GDT worked on the Oscar-winning Pinocchio, Tales of Arcadia, and Cabinet of Curiosities for the streamer.
Next up is Frankenstein, currently showing in limited theaters ahead of its November 7th Netflix global rollout. That’s been a passion project for the creator, something he’s spoken about doing for a decade-plus. Amongst the cast for this movie, which has received rave reviews, are Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. The last section of the documentary, according to reports, focuses heavily on Frankenstein, so it’ll be a must-watch for those looking for some post-exploration.
Beyond Frankenstein, the famed creator is producing the horror movie The Boy in the Iron Box, which has entered production and is based on his short story co-written with Chuck Hogan. He’s also working on a stop-motion animated adaptation of The Buried Giant, which remains in active development, although not yet greenlit under our understanding.
