It’s official: Eva Green has joined the cast of Wednesday season 3 and will play Aunt Ophelia, the mysterious sister of Morticia Addams.

Wednesday is no stranger to big Hollywood stars, and French actress Eva Green is another incredible addition to the series’ cast list. Green dazzled millions around the world as Vesper Lynn in Casino Royale. However, her role as Aunt Ophelia in Wednesday’s third season will reunite her with Tim Burton, with whom she previously worked on Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Green is no stranger to gothic horror, thanks to her beloved but short-lived role as Vanessa Ives in Showtime’s Victorian-era dark fantasy series Penny Dreadful.

Netflix confirmed Green’s casting across its various social media platforms. She is the first new cast member announced for season 3 of Wednesday

As part of the announcement, Eva Green was able to share her excitement about her role with TUDUM:

“I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of ‘Wednesday’ as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckooness to the Addams family.”

Ophelia Frump, aka Aunt Ophelia, is Morticia Addams’s long-lost sister. A psychic, just like Wednesday, while a sophomore at Nevermore Academy, Ophelia pushed her abilities beyond her control, leading to a psychotic break, which resulted in her mother, Hestia, admitting her to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Presumed missing for the past twenty years after her escape from Willow Hill, she is secretly locked in the catacombs of Hestia’s mansion, and ominously written on the wall in blood, “WEDNESDAY MUST DIE.”

Al Gough and Miles Millar, the creators, showrunners, and writers of Wednesday, shared their excitement over Eva Green’s casting too:

“Eva Green has always brought an exhilarating, singular presence to the screen — elegant, haunting and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia. We’re excited to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world”.

More cast announcements will be made in the near future.
