Ryan Reynolds will play the villain in Netflix’s adaptation of Kay Thompson’s beloved children’s book, Eloise. Reynolds will star alongside newcomer Mae Schenk, who will play the title character. Filming is to get underway in November 2025. Here’s everything we know about Eloise on Netflix.
Eloise is an upcoming Netflix Original feature film directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls). The film is based on the beloved book by Kay Thompson and has been adapted into a screenplay by Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton, and co-written by Amy Sherman-Palladino.

The film will be produced by MRC Film and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, with Reynolds starring and producing. Linda Woolverton, Jonny Pariseau, Ashley Fox, and George Dewey are also producers on the project. Molly Milstein and Trudi Francis are listed as the executive producers.
Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s head of feature animation and family film, had the following to say about the project:
“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza. It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm—Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds—in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”
What is the plot of Eloise?
The synopsis has been sourced from Production Weekly:
“Eloise follows the mischievous adventures of a spirited six-year-old girl who lives at the luxurious Plaza Hotel in New York City. With her pug Weenie, turtle Skipperdee, and her ever-patient nanny, Eloise fills her days with playful chaos—ordering room service, exploring the grand halls, and causing delightful trouble wherever she goes. Bold, curious, and endlessly talkative, Eloise charms and exasperates everyone around her with her boundless imagination and fearless personality. A timeless classic, the story captures the whimsical world of childhood freedom and creativity, showing life through the eyes of an endlessly curious little girl.”
Who are the cast members of Eloise?
There are two confirmed cast members for Eloise: Ryan Reynolds and Mae Schenk, who will be making her debut.
Ryan Reynolds, best known for his role as the “Merc with a Mouth” Deadpool, has previously starred in three big-budget Netflix films: 6 Underground, The Adam Project, and Red Notice, the latter of which was Netflix’s most-watched original film before being unseated by K-Pop: Demon Hunters. The name of the Reynolds role has yet to be revealed, but it has been confirmed that he will play the film’s villain.

Mae Schenk is brand new to Hollywood, and, as such, she will make her acting debut in the film as the title character, Eloise. It’s not known how many aspiring actresses auditioned for the film, but it was reported by Variety that when she was introduced to the team over at Maximum Effort, she was a smash hit, and they knew they had their Eloise:
“When Amy [Sherman-Palladino] introduced us to Mae Schenk, we knew instantly she was Eloise. She’s got the spark, the wit, and just the right amount of mischief. We’re so excited to introduce her to the world with our friends at MRC and Netflix.”

What is the production status of Eloise?
As reported in issue 1478 of Production Weekly, filming is due to begin sometime in November 2025 and will run for several months, ending by February 2026.
When is the release date for Eloise?
Netflix has yet to announce a release date or a release window for Eloise.
Given filming is due to end by February 2026, it’s possible we could see the film land on Netflix before the end of 2026. However, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the film were released in 2027.
For now, we await further updates from Netflix.
