Dennis Quaid and Mary Steenburgen To Headline Netflix Film ‘A Dog’s Perfect Christmas’
One for the dog lovers, Netflix’s next Christmas holiday film will be told from the perspective of a family dog as its family faces a crisis during the holiday season. Filming is set to begin imminently, with seven cast members confirmed so far. Here is everything we know so far about A Dog’s Perfect Christmas on Netflix.
The new feature film is an upcoming Netflix Original holiday movie directed by Cathryn Michon and written by Michon alongside W. Bruce Cameron, the bestselling author behind A Dog’s Purpose, A Dog’s Journey, and A Dog’s Way Home, which have previously been adapted into films by Universal Pictures and Sony Pictures, respectively, in the late 2010s.
The film is produced by Dan Angel (Out of My Mind, Ransom Canyon), Michael G. Nathanson, and Jane Charles, with W. Bruce Cameron, Cathryn Michon, Stephanie Sperber, and David Steward II serving as executive producers.

What is the plot of A Dog’s Perfect Christmas?
The film will be told from the perspective of Winstead, a wise senior basset hound who has watched over the Goss family for years. When the mother of the household is unexpectedly placed in an induced coma during the holidays, the family begins to unravel. The grandfather, a teenager in the home, and Winstead do their best to keep things together, but help arrives in the form of Ruby, an energetic corgi puppy who brings new hope when it is needed most.
This follows the logline provided by Netflix: A tale of a family in crisis where a teenager, her grandfather, and his trusty basset hound struggle to keep the household together at Christmas.

Our understanding is that filming is now underway and will run through December 13th, 2025. The film is being shot in Vancouver, with local production run through Burnaby studios under the codename Winstead and Ruby.
There is no confirmed release date yet. However, given the holiday setting and projected production timeline, a late 2026 release window (November or December) is the most likely.
