An anime musical film based on one of Japan’s most beloved folktales is coming to Netflix in January 2026. Cosmic Princess Kaguya will feature music from several prominent artists in the “vocaloid scene” and is sure to attract plenty of anime and music fans, as the film promises to be a visual and musical spectacle. Cosmic Princess Kaguya is an upcoming Japanese Netflix Original musical directed by Shingo Yamashita, who has worked on prominent anime titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto: Shippuden, Chainsaw Man, Soul Eater, and more. The film is produced by Twin Engine, and animation studios such as Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato were also involved.
Director Yamashita shared the following statement with Netflix:
“This is my first full-length original animated film. I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
Soundtracks from the Vocaloid scene (Vocaloid singing synthesizer software) will be featured in the film, including ryo (supercell), 40mP, HoneyWorks, and Yuigot

Netflix has confirmed that Cosmic Princess Kaguya will be released on January 22, 2026.

What is the plot of Cosmic Princess Kaguya?
The plot of the film is mostly under wraps; however, we do know it will be a reimagination of Japan’s beloved and oldest folk tale, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
The 10th-century story is one of Japan’s oldest folk tales and is centered on Taketori no Okina, who discovers an infant the size of his thumb inside a shining bamboo stalk. With no daughter of their own, Taketori and his wife adopt the mysterious child, Kaguya. After growing at a rapid rate, Kaguya grows into a peerless beauty, and despite Taketori’s best attempts to hide her, tales of Kaguya’s beauty spread, and it’s not long before she has suitors.
After refusing nobles, politicians, princes, and even the Emperor of Japan for her hand in marriage, Princess Kaguya reveals she is not from this world and must return to her people on the moon.
Who are the cast members of Cosmic Princess Kaguya?
Yuuko Natsuyoshi plays Princess Kaguya. She is most well-known for her roles as Sasha Necron in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Tsubaki in In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, and as Yuyu Shirai in Assault Lily: Fruits.
Saori Hayami plays Runami Yachiyo. The actress is best known for her roles as Yukino Yukinoshita in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Shouko Nishiyama in A Silent Voice, and Shinobu Kochou in Demon Slayer.
Anna Nagase plays Iroha Sakayori. The actress plays Riko Amanai in Jujutsu Kaisen, Harley Quinn in Isekai Suicide Squad, and Ushio Kofune in Summertime Render.
