The streaming wars are at a confusing point where former original series from other streamers are now being passed around. It happened earlier in the year with Sneaky Pete, and now another former Amazon Prime Video original series is Netflix-bound in multiple countries, including the US: All three seasons of Absentia

Absentia is a tense, psychological thriller that follows FBI agent Emily Byrne, played by Stana Katic, who is found alive after being declared dead while hunting a serial killer. With no memory of what happened, she returns home to a fractured family and a career in ruins, all while being pulled back into a series of violent crimes that suggest her disappearance is far from over.

The show carried mixed reviews from critics throughout its initial run, although audience scores are far better. It ran from 2017 to 2020, spanning three seasons and 30 episodes.

Here’s the Absentia cast list, who all featured throughout the three seasons:

  • Stana Katic (Castle, A Call to Spy)
  • Patrick Heusinger (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Quantico)
  • Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey, Crazyhead)
  • Neil Jackson (Sleepy Hollow, Push)
  • Angel Bonanni (The Gordin Cell, Greenhouse Academy)
  • Bruno Bichir (Narcos, The Bridge)
  • Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hot Fuzz)
  • Christopher Colquhoun (Vera, Holby City)

The series was a Prime Video exclusive in the US throughout its run, although it aired on AXN in international territories. The show was originally intended to set up a fourth season, though it wasn’t to be, as the series was officially canceled in 2021

While we couldn’t pinpoint exactly when Absentia left Prime Video, it does appear to have gone in stages, according to Reddit chatter. All the various streaming tracking services also confirm the series is only available on VOD services, so, to all intents and purposes, Netflix will have the exclusive rights for a while.

Netflix is set to pick up the show in multiple regions beginning on November 14th, 2025. It’s expected to land in most areas, we hear, with the US among them, and we’ve also confirmed most of Latin America and some of Europe.

Why is a Prime Video series heading to Netflix? Well, much like Sneaky Pete, this particular series is owned by Sony Pictures Television, which produced and licensed the show, albeit exclusively, to Prime Video for a fixed window. Many Netflix shows are done in the same manner, including ones with Sony Pictures Television, such as Boots and My Life With the Walter Boys.
